Kentucky has two programs for unpaid family caregivers. The National Family Caregiver Support Program helps people caring for someone 60 or older, someone with Alzheimer's disease or a related disorder, and grandparents or relatives 55 or older raising a child 18 or younger. Help includes information about services, help getting services, counseling, support groups, training, respite care so the caregiver can take a break, and some extra services on a limited basis. The Kentucky Family Caregiver Program helps grandparents who are the main caregiver for a grandchild 18 or younger living in their home, when the child's parents do not live there. It offers support groups, counseling and training, and grandparents with income up to 150% of the federal poverty level may get a yearly grant or voucher for the grandchild's clothing, school supplies, respite, legal, medical or dental costs. Services are run locally and depend on funding, so what is offered differs by region. The grandparent grant or voucher needs income at or below 150% of the federal poverty level, and the family cannot be getting state Kinship Care benefits.
