Illinois homeowners 65 and older can get a yearly cut in the equalized assessed value (EAV) of the home they live in, which lowers the property tax bill. The cut is up to $8,000 in Cook County and the counties next to it, and up to $5,000 in all other counties. You must live in the home, own it (or have a legal interest in it in writing), and be the one who pays the property taxes. There is no income limit. Ask your county's Chief County Assessment Office how to apply. Some counties use Form PTAX-324 the first time and Form PTAX-329 to renew. In Cook County, apply every year with the Cook County Assessor's Office. Homeowners 65 and older with household income of $65,000 or less may also get the Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze.
