How to apply for Florida $5,000 Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemption (10%+ Disability)

Local county property appraiser (statewide exemption under Florida Statute 196.24, overseen by the Florida Department of Revenue)

Who it's for

Florida exempts $5,000 of a disabled veteran's property value from taxation. It applies to an honorably discharged veteran who is a Florida resident and is disabled 10% or more from wartime service or by misfortune. The VA disability letter showing the rating counts as proof. An unremarried surviving spouse keeps the exemption. Apply once through the county property appraiser by March 1. This exemption stacks on top of the regular homestead exemption, and it is separate from the larger benefits for 100% disabled veterans and for combat-disabled veterans age 65 and older.

The statute covers disability of 10% or more from wartime service or by misfortune, with honorable discharge and Florida residency — the county property appraiser confirms qualification. Application can be filed before the VA paperwork arrives; once the documentation comes, the exemption is effective from the application date, with refunds available for up to 4 prior years.

What you'll need

  • VA disability certificate or award letter showing the rating percentage
  • Proof of honorable discharge (DD-214)
  • Exemption application (Form DR-501) filed with the county property appraiser by March 1
