How to apply for Georgia Disabled Veteran Vehicle Tax Exemption (One Vehicle, Ad Valorem / TAVT)

County tag office (statewide exemption under O.C.G.A. §48-5-478, Georgia Department of Revenue Motor Vehicle Division)

Who it's for

Georgia exempts one vehicle owned by or leased to a qualifying disabled veteran from all vehicle ad valorem taxes. The exemption covers veterans the VA verifies as 100 percent totally and permanently service-connected disabled, veterans rated unemployable, and veterans receiving a VA statutory award for loss of hands, feet, or sight. It applies to only one vehicle at a time, and the veteran can move it to a new vehicle after selling or replacing the old one. An unremarried surviving spouse or minor child can continue the exemption. Claim it at the county tag office with the VA letter and the state's veterans affidavit (Form MV-30).

This result is modeled on the 100% VA rating path. Veterans rated unemployable, and veterans with a VA statutory award for loss or permanent loss of use of a hand, foot, or sight, also qualify. The exemption covers only one vehicle at a time, and how much it saves depends on whether the vehicle owes annual ad valorem tax or the one-time title tax (TAVT) — the county tag office can confirm both qualification and the amount.
