How to apply for Michigan Free Hunting and Fishing Licenses for 100% Disabled Veterans

Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR)

Who it's for

Michigan resident veterans who are 100% permanently and totally disabled from military service — or rated individually unemployable by the VA — receive DNR hunting and fishing licenses at no cost. The benefit covers all regular (non-lottery) hunting and fishing licenses, so an all-species fishing license or a deer license costs nothing. Carry VA documentation of the qualifying status when buying licenses and while hunting or fishing. Licenses renew each license year with the same proof.

The free-license benefit requires Michigan residency and VA benefits at the 100% rate for a permanent and total service-connected disability (other than blindness), or an individual-unemployability rating — so a veteran rated below 100% may still qualify through the unemployability path. Lottery-drawn licenses are not included.

What you'll need

  • VA documentation showing 100% permanent-and-total status or individual unemployability (carry it when buying licenses and while afield)
  • Proof of Michigan residency (driver's license or state ID)
