How to apply for Michigan Veteran Homes (State Long-Term Care)
Michigan Veteran Homes (Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs)
Who it's for
Michigan operates three state veteran homes — in Grand Rapids, Chesterfield Township, and Marquette (D.J. Jacobetti) — providing skilled nursing care and short-term rehabilitation for veterans. A veteran eligible for VA health care or VA financial assistance for long-term care may be admitted with an honorable discharge. Subject to space, a spouse, surviving spouse, or Gold Star parent of an eligible veteran may also be admitted. Costs depend on VA benefits, insurance, and a financial assessment; VA per-diem support keeps rates below typical private nursing homes. Apply directly to the chosen home with the discharge paperwork.
Admission requires an honorable discharge and eligibility for VA health care or VA financial assistance for long-term care; veterans who enlisted after September 7, 1980 generally need 24 continuous months of service. The admissions team reviews eligibility and the level of care needed, and admission depends on space at a specific home. Spouses, surviving spouses, and Gold Star parents may be admitted subject to space and other requirements. Call 800-642-4838 (1-800-MICH-VET) to discuss a specific situation.
