How to apply for Free VA Claims Assistance from Ohio County Veterans Service Officers

County Veterans Service Offices (all 88 Ohio counties), trained and certified through the Ohio Department of Veterans Services (ODVS)

Who it's for

Every Ohio county has a Veterans Service Office where accredited officers help veterans, spouses, and survivors file and appeal VA claims — disability compensation, pension, Aid and Attendance, and survivor benefits — at no cost. Getting the VA rating right matters twice in Ohio: the rating drives federal compensation AND unlocks state benefits like the enhanced homestead exemption and free hunting and fishing licenses. The officers are trained by VA employees and national veterans service organizations. No one needs to pay a private company to file a VA claim. Call 877-644-6838 (877-OHIO-VET) or use the ODVS directory to find the county office.

Claims assistance is free — County Veterans Service Officers are trained and certified to file initial claims and appeals at no charge. Bring the discharge paperwork; the office can also help request missing military records.

What you'll need

  • DD-214 or other military discharge paperwork
