How to apply for Pennsylvania Veterans' Temporary Assistance (Emergency Financial Help)

Who it's for
Pennsylvania provides temporary financial assistance of up to $1,600 in a 12-month period to veterans and their unmarried surviving spouses who face a direct and immediate need for the necessities of living — food, shelter, fuel, and clothing. The veteran must have served on active duty and been discharged under honorable conditions, or have a service-connected disability certified by the VA, or have died in service. Applicants must be bona fide Pennsylvania residents and not already receiving enough help from another state or federal agency for the same need. Apply through the County Director of Veterans Affairs in the county of residence — the help is free to request and the grant does not have to be repaid.
Approval requires showing a clear, present, direct, and immediate need for temporary help with shelter or the necessities of living, and that no other state or federal agency is already providing enough assistance for that need. Unmarried surviving spouses of eligible veterans can also apply. The County Director of Veterans Affairs reviews each application and can confirm what counts as a qualifying need.
