How to apply for Texas 100% Disabled Veteran Homestead Exemption (Total Property Tax Exemption)

Local county appraisal district (statewide exemption under Texas Tax Code §11.131, overseen by the Texas Comptroller)

Who it's for

A Texas veteran with a 100% VA disability rating — or 100% compensation for individual unemployability — pays NO property tax on the residence homestead: the entire appraised value is exempt. This is one of the largest dollar benefits in Texas. An unmarried surviving spouse keeps the full exemption on the same homestead, and carries a fixed dollar amount to a new homestead. Apply once through the county appraisal district with the VA award letter.

Qualification requires 100% VA compensation — either a 100% rating or individual unemployability. Veterans rated 70–90% WITHOUT unemployability qualify for the partial exemption instead. The surviving-spouse continuation requires not having remarried and keeping the same homestead.

What you'll need

  • VA award letter showing 100% disability rating OR 100% compensation at the individual-unemployability rate
  • Photo ID (driver's license or state ID)
  • Homestead exemption application (Form 50-114) from the county appraisal district

Where to apply

Step by step

  1. Confirm you qualify — you must have a 100% VA disability rating OR receive 100% compensation at the individual-unemployability rate. Veterans rated 70–90% without individual unemployability qualify for a different, partial exemption instead.
  2. Gather your required documents: your VA award letter showing 100% disability or individual-unemployability compensation, a valid photo ID (driver's license or state ID), and a completed Homestead Exemption Application (Form 50-114) from your county appraisal district.
  3. Get Form 50-114 from your local county appraisal district. Many districts make the form available online through their official website.
  4. Complete Form 50-114 fully and accurately. Make sure the address on the form matches the residence homestead where you are applying.
  5. Submit your completed application and supporting documents to your local county appraisal district online through the district's official portal.
  6. Watch for a confirmation or decision notice from your county appraisal district. Processing times vary — contact your district directly for an estimate.

What to expect: After submitting, your county appraisal district will review your application and documents. If approved, the full appraised value of your residence homestead is exempt from property taxes — meaning you owe no property tax on that home. This is a one-time application; you do not need to renew each year as long as you stay in the same homestead. If you move, you must re-file at your new address. Surviving spouses who have not remarried may continue the full exemption on the same homestead, or carry a fixed dollar amount to a new homestead — but should contact the appraisal district to re-establish eligibility after any move.
