How to apply for LIHEAP energy assistance (Alabama)

Who it's for
The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps households pay home heating and cooling bills. In Alabama, ADECA funds local Community Action Agencies, and you apply with the agency that serves your county. ADECA does not take applications. Gross monthly income must be at or below 150% of the federal poverty level: $1,956 for one person, $2,644 for two, $3,331 for three, and $4,019 for four. You need proof of gross income for everyone in the home for the month before you apply, Social Security cards for all household members, a photo ID, and a recent heating or cooling bill in the name of the head of household or spouse. The amount of help depends on available funds, income, household size, and fuel type. You pay any balance not covered.
Being eligible does not guarantee help: funds are limited and are shared out to local agencies. Older adults, people with disabilities, and households with young children are priority groups. The local Community Action Agency makes the final decision. Households larger than 8 are shown against the 8-person limit.
