How to apply for NassauTRANSIT — Fixed Route + Island Hopper + Paratransit (Nassau County)

NassauTRANSIT — operated by the Nassau County Council on Aging, Inc. (NCCOA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving Nassau County, FL for 40+ years; contracted by the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners as the designated Community Transportation Coordinator under the Florida Transportation Disadvantaged (TD) program; contracted local AAA delivery partner under ElderSource (PSA 4 Area Agency on Aging)

Who it's for

NassauTRANSIT is a nonprofit transportation system operated by the Nassau County Council on Aging (NCCOA) — the 501(c)(3) AAA delivery partner for Nassau County. NassauTRANSIT operates four distinct services: (1) Cross-County Transit connecting Callahan, Hilliard, Yulee, and Fernandina Beach to Jacksonville's River City Marketplace and Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) — providing access to Duval County medical care, retail, and education. (2) Island Hopper shuttle — a hop-on/hop-off circulator covering the northern half of Amelia Island (Fernandina Beach core). (3) Registered Paratransit — door-to-door demand-response for seniors 60+ and people with disabilities, requiring advance reservation. (4) Florida TD-program funded trips for low-income riders meeting state TD eligibility. Trip purposes include medical appointments, social engagements, recreation, shopping, and other needs. Eligibility for the paratransit/TD pathways uses the Florida TD framework: age 60+, OR documented disability, OR low-income status — any one of three pathways qualifies. The Island Hopper and cross-county fixed-route services are open to all riders. Reserve registered paratransit by calling NassauTRANSIT at 904-261-0700 or 1-800-298-9122.

NassauTRANSIT is operated by NCCOA under contract with the Nassau County BoCC — historically distinctive because in 2023-2024 NCCOA publicly considered stepping down as the public-transportation provider, so future service structure may shift. Confirm operational status at time of application. The cross-county route to Jacksonville is a genuine medical-access asset for Nassau seniors needing specialty care at Baptist Health Jacksonville, UF Health Jacksonville, or Mayo Clinic — most fixed-route systems in peer counties don't cross county lines. Island Hopper is uniquely valuable for Fernandina Beach seniors who can't drive and want to remain socially active on Amelia Island. Registered paratransit eligibility uses the Florida TD three-pathway test (60+ OR disability OR low-income), so most Nassau seniors qualify; the binding constraint is trip capacity and advance reservation timing.
