Who it's for
The Nassau County Council on Aging (NCCOA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has served Nassau County, Florida for over 40 years as an advocate and resource for adults age 60+. NCCOA's Meals on Wheels program delivers more than 2,200 nutritious meals each month — approximately 26,400 annual meals — to homebound seniors in Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island, Yulee, Callahan, and Hilliard. Volunteers handle the deliveries. NCCOA also operates Meals on Wheels for Pets — providing pet food and supplies for homebound seniors' companion animals so seniors do not have to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their pet. Beyond home-delivered meals, NCCOA operates two Senior Life Centers (one in Fernandina Beach, one in Hilliard) offering congregate dining + activities + classes + socialization. Eligibility is age 60+ and Nassau County residency for congregate meals; home-delivered Meals on Wheels additionally requires documented homebound status (illness, disability, or isolation). Apply by calling NCCOA at 904-261-0701.
NCCOA's Meals on Wheels uses a three-pathway homebound test: illness, disability, OR isolation — the inclusion of isolation as a qualifying condition is broader than peer county records that require strict functional homebound status. This means socially-isolated seniors who can technically leave the home may still qualify for delivery. The 2,200/month delivery volume (~26,400 annual) is moderate scale — smaller than St. Johns COASJC (300+/day = 110,000+/year) but larger than Putnam Easterseals (~2,860/year). Meals on Wheels for Pets is a genuinely distinctive program — Nassau is one of only a few counties in FL where pet food assistance accompanies senior meal delivery; this matters because most homebound seniors live alone and the pet may be their primary companion. Congregate meals at the two Senior Life Centers have a lower bar (60+ and ambulatory) and are more accessible for active seniors. NCCOA's integrated AAA model means a single case manager can coordinate meals + NassauTRANSIT trips + adult day care + home health for a senior with complex needs.
