How to apply for Walton Transportation (Tri-County Community Council) + GoWal Free Public Transit
Walton Transportation — operated by Tri-County Community Council, Inc. (TCCC) as the designated Community Transportation Coordinator (CTC) for the Florida Transportation Disadvantaged (TD) program in Walton County; door-to-door paratransit serving medical, nutritional, shopping, education, recreation, and employment trips. Walton County also operates GoWal, a free public-transit service running DeFuniak Springs to South Walton
Who it's for
Walton County has a layered transit ecosystem. Walton Transportation, operated by Tri-County Community Council, Inc. (TCCC), is the designated Community Transportation Coordinator (CTC) for the Florida Transportation Disadvantaged (TD) program — providing door-to-door non-emergency medical and daily-needs transportation across Walton County. Trip purposes include local non-emergency medical treatment, nutrition (congregate meals or grocery), shopping, education, recreation, employment/training, and other daily needs. A 24-hour advance reservation is required; next-day appointments need confirmation by 12:00 p.m. the previous working day. Office hours are Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Eligibility uses the Florida TD framework: age 60+ OR documented disability OR low-income transportation-disadvantaged status. Separately, GoWal (gowaltransit.com) operates a FREE public-transit service running between DeFuniak Springs (in north Walton) and South Walton (Santa Rosa Beach / Seacrest / Miramar Beach corridor) — a meaningful free option for seniors traveling between the inland county seat and the coastal communities. Okaloosa County Transit / EC Rider also serves portions of South Walton via the Wave fixed-route system. Apply for Walton Transportation by calling 850-892-2422 or emailing waltoncountytransportation@tricountycommunitycouncil.com.
Walton County has multiple transit options worth comparing: (1) Walton Transportation via TCCC is the TD paratransit (this record); (2) GoWal is FREE public transit between DeFuniak Springs and South Walton — a meaningful alternative for seniors who can use fixed-stop service and don't need door-to-door access; (3) EC Rider (Okaloosa) extends Wave fixed-route service into South Walton. For active ambulatory seniors traveling on a known schedule, GoWal's free service is the highest-value option. For seniors with mobility limitations or unscheduled medical appointments, Walton Transportation (TCCC) is the door-to-door choice. The 24-hour advance reservation requirement for Walton Transportation is a real constraint — confirm 24 hours ahead and have backup plans for urgent appointments. North Walton residents (Paxton, north DeFuniak Springs) and South Walton residents face different mobility patterns; the coastal South Walton corridor has more transit overlap than inland north Walton.
