How to apply for Georgia Energy Assistance (LIHEAP)

Georgia Department of Human Services, Division of Family & Children Services — delivered through local Community Action Agencies

Who it's for

Georgia's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps low-income households pay their home heating and cooling bills. It offers a regular seasonal payment toward energy costs and crisis help when a household faces a shutoff or is already without service. Households qualify if their total gross income is at or below 60% of the state median income and they are responsible for their home energy costs. Seniors 65 and older and people who are medically homebound get an early application window — heating assistance opens for them the first workday of December, and cooling assistance the first workday of April, ahead of the general public. The program is run locally by Community Action Agencies, and applicants are served first-come, first-served until funds run out, so applying early matters.

Eligibility is income-tested at or below 60% of Georgia's state median income (the dollar threshold varies by household size and updates each program year) and requires that you are responsible for your home energy costs. Seniors 65+ and the medically homebound may apply early (heating: first workday of December; cooling: first workday of April). Benefits are first-come, first-served through your local Community Action Agency until funds are exhausted, so this shows as a may-qualify result — apply early in the season.
