How to apply for CAPABLE — Home Safety Program

KIPDA Area Agency on Aging & Independent Living (with Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville; funded by the Kentucky Department for Aging & Independent Living)

Who it's for

CAPABLE (Community Aging in Place — Advancing Better Living for Elders) is a free program that helps older adults stay safe in their own homes. Over about four to five months, an occupational therapist and a registered nurse make 8 to 10 visits, and a handyperson provides minor home repairs, modifications, and assistive devices (such as grab bars, railings, or improved lighting) chosen around goals you set. It serves residents of Jefferson, Oldham, and Bullitt counties who are 60 or older, have a household income below 60% of the area median, have difficulty with everyday activities like bathing, dressing, grooming, or walking across a room, and would benefit from a minor home modification. You must be the homeowner or have the homeowner's permission to make changes. There is no cost to participate.

Enrollment depends on a household income below 60% of the area median income (which varies by household size), a functional assessment confirming difficulty with daily activities and a home-modification need, and your being the homeowner or having the homeowner's written permission. Slots are limited by funding. Confirm eligibility and request a referral through KIPDA's Aging & Disability Resource Center at 1-502-266-5571.
