How to apply for Medicare Savings Programs (QMB, SLMB, QI)
Louisiana Department of Health (Louisiana Medicaid)
Who it's for
Medicare Savings Programs help people with Medicare Part A pay their Medicare costs. QMB pays the Part A and Part B premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance. SLMB and QI pay the Part B premium. From March 1, 2026, the monthly countable income limits are: QMB $1,330 for one person or $1,804 for a couple; SLMB under $1,596 or $2,164; and QI under $1,796 or $2,435. In Louisiana there is no resource (asset) limit for QMB, SLMB, or QI. People in these programs also get Extra Help with Medicare drug plan costs. Apply online, by mail or fax, in person at a Medicaid office, or by phone at 1-888-342-6207.
Shown against the highest tier (QI). Limits are for countable income, after allowed deductions. You must have Medicare Part A. People who get SSI are usually enrolled in QMB without applying. Louisiana Medicaid makes the final decision.
