What to do after a denial
Denials are often fixable — missing paperwork and countable-income questions are the most common reasons. The denial helper organizes the next steps.
- Set the application's status to "Denied" — a "Denied — what to do next" section opens on the card.
- Enter the date on the denial notice and pick the closest reason.
- Enter the appeal deadline printed on the notice. For many programs a cited suggestion shows the usual window — the date on the notice is the one that counts.
- Follow the next steps for that reason, and use the call script when phoning the agency.
- Save the denial notice to the vault so it's on hand.

Free help with appeals
The Eldercare Locator (eldercare.acl.gov) finds the local aging agency; LawHelp.org lists free legal aid. The agency phone number on the notice can also explain the appeal process at no cost.
Saved appeal deadlines appear on the renewal calendar so they can't slip by. This is general organizational information, not legal advice — confirm deadlines and requirements with the agency or a qualified professional.
Not legal or financial advice. The agency makes the final eligibility decision.
