How to apply for SMUD Energy Assistance Program Rate (EAPR) in California
Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD)
Who it's for
SMUD's Energy Assistance Program Rate (EAPR) gives income-eligible home customers a monthly discount on their SMUD electric bill. For a household of one or two people, monthly income must be $3,607 or less (higher for larger households). The discount depends on your income: up to $105 a month for the lowest incomes, then $42, $20 or $10 a month. Use SMUD's "Do I qualify?" tool, then apply online through My Account or send in a mail-in application with proof of income. Call 1-888-742-7683 with questions. Being on EAPR also qualifies you for Sacramento County's water and garbage rate credit.
EAPR is only for residential SMUD electric customers; homes served by another electric utility do not qualify. The income limit grows with household size ($4,553 a month for three people); this check uses the one-or-two-person limit. The discount tier is set by your income as a share of the federal poverty level, so the amount you get may be less than the top $105 a month. Applications can take 2 to 4 weeks to process.
