How to apply for General Assistance (San Joaquin County)
San Joaquin County Human Services Agency (SJCHSA)
Who it's for
San Joaquin County General Assistance (GA) is a basic-needs LOAN program — assistance must be paid back — that the County HSA provides to indigent residents who are not eligible for any other categorical aid program. For a low-income senior it is mainly a bridge while a Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI) claim is pending. The maximum monthly assistance is $367 total, with up to $320 for single housing or $210 for shared housing; the remainder may come as personal-needs vouchers for hygiene, household, and food items. Travel assistance is also available for residents who need help returning to a former residence. Clients are responsible for turning in monthly job-search verification and income reports. To apply, call SJCHSA at 1-209-468-1000 (M-F 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) or visit the main office on East Washington Street in Stockton.
