How to apply for General Relief (Santa Barbara County)
Santa Barbara County Department of Social Services (DSS)
Who it's for
Santa Barbara County General Relief (GR) is a county-funded program that provides temporary cash aid to indigent (very low income) adults who do not qualify for federal or state programs. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents. GR is a short-term loan: clients sign a lien to reimburse the County from future Workers' Compensation or SSI/SSP awards, and participation in the CalFresh Employment and Training (CFET) program reduces the repayment obligation. Applicants are categorized as employable (CFET participation required) or unemployable (proof of disability required — the County's SSI/SSP Advocates help with the SSI application, which is the usual path for low-income seniors awaiting disability income). Apply in person at a DSS district office in Santa Barbara, Lompoc, or Santa Maria, by mail, or online at BenefitsCal.com; all offices: 1 (844) 289-4682, Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Santa Barbara County GR has conditions this check cannot confirm for you: you must be an indigent (very low income) adult resident who is a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident and does not qualify for federal or state programs, and GR is a loan requiring a signed lien on future Workers' Compensation or SSI/SSP awards. Unemployable applicants must provide proof of disability; employable applicants must participate in CFET. The County page does not publish a maximum monthly grant amount. Apply in person (Santa Barbara, Lompoc, or Santa Maria DSS office), by mail, or online at BenefitsCal.com; phone 1 (844) 289-4682.
