How to apply for Gulf County Transit — Big Bend Transit + Arc on the Gulf + GCSCA Senior Transportation
Gulf County's layered transit ecosystem includes (1) Big Bend Transit — regional paratransit operator serving Gulf and Franklin Counties under the Florida Transportation Disadvantaged (TD) program; (2) Arc on the Gulf — 501(c)(3) nonprofit offering Rides for Public to Gulf and Franklin County residents; and (3) Gulf County Senior Citizens Association — local AAA delivery partner offering supplemental senior transportation
Who it's for
Gulf County has a layered three-source transit ecosystem reflecting the coordination needs of a small coastal Panhandle county. (1) Big Bend Transit operates regional paratransit serving Gulf AND Franklin Counties — providing TD-program paratransit for individuals with disabilities, Medicaid non-emergency medical transportation, and general public transportation for medical appointments, work, and grocery store trips. (2) Arc on the Gulf is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit offering Rides for Public to any resident of Gulf or Franklin County — phone 850-229-6550. (3) Gulf County Senior Citizens Association (GCSCA) provides supplemental senior transportation coordinated with its Meals on Wheels and Senior Center programs. Gulf County does NOT operate a fixed-route bus system — all options are demand-response paratransit. Eligibility for the TD-program-funded pathway uses the Florida TD framework: age 60+ OR documented disability OR low-income transportation-disadvantaged status. Trip purposes include non-emergency medical (commonly to Ascension Sacred Heart Gulf in Port St. Joe), shopping, work, and other daily needs. Advance reservations are required for all services.
Gulf County's three-source transit model is genuinely distinctive — most peer rural FL counties have one or two paratransit options. The three sources serve overlapping but distinct trip purposes: Big Bend Transit handles regional Medicaid + TD-program trips and is the primary medical transport option; Arc on the Gulf provides general public rides for any Gulf/Franklin resident; GCSCA provides senior-specific transportation coordinated with the senior services umbrella. For seniors, calling GCSCA at the integrated intake gets transportation + meals + LIHEAP referral coordinated in one conversation; for general public transportation, Arc on the Gulf's 850-229-6550 is the simplest path. For tertiary medical care to Tallahassee or Panama City, Big Bend Transit can arrange longer-distance trips with adequate advance notice. Gulf County does NOT operate a fixed-route bus system — same-day rides are typically not available.
