How to apply for Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH) Financial Assistance Program
Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, Inc. (private nonprofit; the de facto safety-net hospital for Leon County)
Who it's for
Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH) is the dominant healthcare system in the Big Bend region and Leon County's de facto safety-net hospital. While TMH is currently a private nonprofit (it was privatized from the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital Authority in the early 1990s and is no longer a public hospital district), its Financial Assistance Program provides full or partial discounts on medically necessary care to patients who cannot afford to pay. Uninsured and underinsured patients with family income at or below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines are eligible for full charity (100 percent discount). Patients whose total hospital liability exceeds 25 percent of annual family income also qualify for 100 percent charity even at higher income levels. For broader eligibility, the sliding-fee discount extends up to 400 percent FPG when care is provided by the hospital. Patients with family income above four times the federal poverty level for a family of four are not considered for charity. Submit the Application for Assistance with Hospital Expenses with verification of income; call Patient Financial Services at (850) 431-6200 (Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.) to start.
TMH financial assistance is a per-encounter benefit — you qualify only at the point you seek care at a TMH facility. The catch-all income gate modeled above (~400% Federal Poverty Level / $62,400 for a single-person household 2026) is the OUTER bound for sliding-fee assistance. FULL CHARITY (100% discount) requires either family income at or below 200% FPG ($31,200 single 2026) OR total hospital liability exceeding 25% of annual family income (a catastrophic-cost provision that helps higher-income patients with very large bills). Patients above four times the poverty level for a family of four are not considered. Call (850) 431-6200 before or shortly after your visit to start the application.
