Johnson County public transportation is the Shawnee Mass Transit District, the public transit provider for the five southernmost Illinois counties (Alexander, Johnson, Massac, Pulaski, Union). Shawnee MTD runs fixed routes plus curb-to-curb demand-response and intercity service for medical appointments, senior centers, and essential errands across Johnson County (Vienna, Goreville, Buncombe, New Burnside, Cypress) and connecting trips around the region. Seniors and people with disabilities ride at reduced fares; the Illinois Benefit Access Program (Illinois Department on Aging) provides additional free/reduced fares for income-eligible riders 65+.
