Sangamon County public transportation is the Springfield Mass Transit District (SMTD), serving Springfield and the metro area with fixed-route buses. Seniors 65+ and people with disabilities qualify for a Reduced Fare ID — about half the regular fare (around $0.60 a ride) — and income-eligible riders can get a Free Fare ID through the Illinois Benefit Access Program. SMTD also operates Access Sangamon, origin-to-destination paratransit for people who cannot use the fixed-route buses. Apply for a fare ID at the SMTD office with proof of age or disability.
