How to apply for Kansas Disabled Veteran Sales Tax Exemption (100% or TDIU, up to $24,000 of purchases a year)
Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR), with the Kansas Office of Veterans Services (KOVS)
Who it's for
Starting July 1, 2026, Kansas disabled veterans who qualify do not pay sales tax on most purchases for personal use, up to $24,000 of purchases per calendar year. Motor vehicles, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and electronic cigarettes are not included. The veteran must be a Kansas resident, honorably discharged (including general under honorable conditions), and certified by the VA as 100% Permanent and Total or totally disabled or unemployable (TDIU). A surviving spouse whose veteran spouse qualified and died on or after July 1, 2026 can keep the exemption until remarrying. Apply online (recommended) or with paper Form K-97 to get a Disabled Veteran Sales Tax Exemption Certificate Card, which is renewed every three years. Kansas Office of Veterans Services representatives can help; call 785-296-3976.
Veterans rated below 100% qualify if the VA deems them totally disabled or unemployable (TDIU); this screen cannot see TDIU, so a veteran with TDIU should apply. Purchases that will be used to produce income do not qualify. KDOR makes the final decision.
