How to apply for KanCare (Kansas Medicaid) for people who are aged (65+), blind, or disabled

Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), Division of Health Care Finance (KanCare Clearinghouse)

Who it's for

KanCare is Kansas Medicaid, health coverage for people with limited income. Persons aged 65 or older, and persons who are blind or disabled by Social Security rules, are covered groups. People who get SSI payments are also covered. You must live in Kansas and meet citizenship or immigrant status rules. Most plans for the elderly and persons with disabilities also have a limit on resources such as bank accounts, cars, property, and stocks. Coverage usually starts with the month you apply, and sometimes the three months before. Coverage is reviewed each year. Call the KanCare Clearinghouse at 1-800-792-4884 for help applying.

KanCare has several plans for older and disabled adults, each with its own income and resource rules, so no single income limit is used here. People with income over a plan's limit may still qualify after a spend down. People under 65 must meet Social Security's disability or blindness rules. KDHE makes the final decision.
