How to apply for Renters' Tax Credit (60+) — Maryland

Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT)

Who it's for

Maryland's Renters' Tax Credit pays up to $1,000 a year to renters — the renter's counterpart of the homeowners' credit, on the idea that rent indirectly pays property tax. Renters age 60 or older (or 100% disabled, or surviving spouses 50+) qualify based on an income chart; younger renters with children may also qualify. Apply to SDAT by October 1.

Eligibility follows an income-vs-rent chart on the SDAT page rather than one income cap; SDAT computes the credit.

What you'll need

  • SDAT Renters' Tax Credit application
  • Lease and proof of rent paid
  • Income documentation
