How to apply for New Jersey $250 Property Tax Deduction for Senior Citizens and Disabled Persons
Municipal tax assessor or collector (statewide deduction overseen by the NJ Division of Taxation, Property Administration)
Who it's for
New Jersey takes $250 off the property tax bill each year for a homeowner who is 65 or older, or disabled. You must own and live in the home and have lived in New Jersey for at least one year as of October 1 of the year before. Your income (with your spouse's) must be no more than $10,000 a year, but Social Security and government pensions do not count toward that limit. A surviving spouse age 55 or older can keep the deduction on the same home. File Form PTD with your town's tax assessor or collector, then file Form PD5 every year by March 1 to keep it.
Income must be $10,000 a year or less (with a spouse's income), not counting Social Security or federal, state, county or municipal government pensions. The check cannot separate those sources, so it does not test income. Age 65, disability, ownership and one year of New Jersey residency must all be met by the dates the state sets; the local assessor decides.
