Who it's for

City of Portsmouth offers real estate tax relief (mixed) for homeowners who are 65 or older or permanently disabled. Total household income must be $30,000 or less, and net worth (not counting the home) must be $75,000 or less. Two components: abatement of 10%-100% by income bracket ($0-$21,000 = 100% down to $29,001-$30,000 = 10%, per City Code sec. 35-163), and a tax freeze for households with income up to $50,000 and net worth up to $175,000 ('a household's total combined income from all sources for the preceding calendar year shall not exceed $50,000, and the net combined financial worth shall not exceed $175,000'). Annual application January 1 - April 30; forms from the Commissioner of the Revenue, City Treasurer, and library branches; must be notarized. Apply through the local commissioner of the revenue or assessment office.
