How to apply for Real Estate Tax Relief for the Elderly & Disabled — Shenandoah
Shenandoah County Commissioner of the Revenue / assessment office
Who it's for
Shenandoah County offers real estate tax relief (mixed) for homeowners who are 65 or older or permanently disabled. Total household income must be $40,000 or less, and net worth (not counting the home) must be $150,000 or less. County Code section 146-20 'Tax Relief for the Elderly': exemption or deferral. First $7,000 of each non-spouse relative's income excluded; net worth excludes the dwelling and up to five acres. Exemption brackets: $0.01-$30,000 = 100%, to $32,500 = 80%, to $35,000 = 60%, to $37,500 = 40%, to $40,000 = 20%; the page caps the exempted amount with the (sic) text 'one thousand dollars ($1500)'. Apply by March 1 with the Commissioner of the Revenue, 600 North Main Street, Suite 104, Woodstock (540-459-6174). The page does not state the qualifying age (the program title and disability proof requirements are stated; age 65 is not printed on this page, so age is left null). Apply through the local commissioner of the revenue or assessment office.
Limits shown are Shenandoah County's current published figures; relief brackets, filing windows, and exclusions are set by local ordinance and the locality makes the final determination, so this shows as a may-qualify result.
