Smyth County offers real estate tax relief (exemption) for homeowners who are 65 or older or permanently disabled. Total household income must be $40,000 or less, and net worth (not counting the home) must be $100,000 or less. Flat discount of up to $200.00 on the real estate bill, not a percentage exemption. Application period is January 1 through December 5 of the tax year, late applications to December 15 with Commissioner approval. Income of minors is exempt, and up to $12,000 is exempt for occupants 18-23 enrolled in two semesters of school. Net worth excludes the primary residence and up to one acre (per application form).
