How to apply for General Assistance (San Joaquin County) in California

San Joaquin County Human Services Agency (SJCHSA)

Who it's for

San Joaquin County General Assistance (GA) is a basic-needs LOAN program — assistance must be paid back — that the County HSA provides to indigent residents who are not eligible for any other categorical aid program. For a low-income senior it is mainly a bridge while a Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI) claim is pending. The maximum monthly assistance is $367 total, with up to $320 for single housing or $210 for shared housing; the remainder may come as personal-needs vouchers for hygiene, household, and food items. Travel assistance is also available for residents who need help returning to a former residence. You must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident and at least 18. Employable recipients must complete a monthly job search and work at a County-assigned Work Project site, with the work credited toward their GA payment. Applications are taken in person at the SJCHSA office, 333 E. Washington Street, Stockton (Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–5 p.m.; same-day appointments, first come first served) — questions go to the agency main line, 1-209-468-1000.
