How to apply for Medicare Savings Programs (QMB, SLMB, QI-1) in Colorado

Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing

Who it's for

Medicare Savings Programs help people with Medicare pay their Medicare premiums, and at the lowest income level (QMB) also deductibles and co-insurance. Colorado's 2026 monthly income limits are QMB $1,350 / $1,824 (single / couple), SLMB $1,616 / $2,184, and QI-1 $1,816 / $2,455. The 2026 resource limit is $11,450 for one person and $17,910 for a couple. Your home, one car, and a burial plot do not count. Apply through the county human services office or Colorado PEAK.

Shown against the highest tier (QI-1); lower income qualifies for more help. You must have or be eligible for Medicare. If you have income from working, you may qualify even above these limits. The county human services office makes the final decision.

Step by step

  1. Check that you have or are eligible for Medicare. Compare your income and assets to the program limits. The highest income tier shown is QI-1. Lower income may qualify you for more help through QMB or SLMB. If you have income from working, you may still qualify even if your income is above these limits.
  2. Gather your Medicare card, proof of income, and proof of assets.
  3. Apply online through Colorado PEAK or apply by phone at 1-800-221-3943.
  4. Complete the application with your household, Medicare, income, and asset details.
  5. Watch for any follow-up questions or requests for more information from the county human services office.
  6. Renew your coverage each year if you are approved.

What to expect: After you apply, the county human services office reviews your information and makes the final decision. You may be asked for more details or documents. Processing times vary, so ask for an estimate when you apply. If you are approved, remember that renewal is annual.
