How to apply for Medicare Savings Programs in Iowa (QMB, SLMB, E-SLMB)
Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (Iowa HHS), Iowa Medicaid
Who it's for
Iowa's Medicare Savings Programs help people with Medicare and limited income pay Medicare costs. QMB pays Medicare Part A and Part B premiums, the Part B deductible, and co-insurance and deductibles. SLMB and E-SLMB (Expanded SLMB) pay the Medicare Part B premium. People in these programs also get Extra Help paying for prescription drugs. The 2026 monthly income limits are: QMB $1,330 for one person or $1,804 for a married couple; SLMB less than $1,596 or $2,164; E-SLMB less than $1,796 or $2,435. Resources must be under $9,950 for one person or $14,910 for a married couple. Apply in the Iowa HHS Benefits Portal, or call 1-855-889-7985.
Shown against the highest tier (E-SLMB); lower income qualifies for more help. QMB needs Medicare Part A; SLMB and E-SLMB need both Part A and Part B, and are for people who do not qualify for other Medicaid. If income or savings are too high, ask Iowa HHS about Medically Needy (spend down). Iowa HHS makes the final decision.
