How to apply for LIHEAP energy assistance (Mid-Iowa Community Action) — Story

Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA), Inc.

Who it's for

LIHEAP (the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program) gives a one-time payment toward winter heating bills for households with income at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines. Households with someone 60 or older or disabled can apply starting October 1; everyone else can apply starting November 1, and applications close April 30. In Story County, Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA) takes LIHEAP applications. Its Story County Family Services office is at 230 SE 16th Street in Ames. You can schedule an in-person appointment, apply online, or mail or drop off a paper application. You do not need to be behind on your heating bill to apply, and crisis help may be available if you have a disconnect notice or have been shut off. Call 641-752-7162 (the menu reaches all MICA offices).

The community action agency decides eligibility and the benefit amount, and help depends on available funds. Household income must be at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines.
