How to apply for Illinois Homestead Exemption for Persons with Disabilities (Property Tax)

Illinois Department of Revenue + your county Chief County Assessment Office (Supervisor of Assessments)

Who it's for

Illinois homeowners with a disability can get a yearly $2,000 cut in the equalized assessed value (EAV) of the home they live in, which lowers the property tax bill. You must own the home (or have a legal interest in it in writing), live in it as your main home, and be the one who pays the property taxes. There is no age limit and no income limit. To apply the first time, file Form PTAX-343 with proof of disability at your county's Chief County Assessment Office. Then renew each year with Form PTAX-343-R. You cannot get this exemption in the same year as the Standard Homestead Exemption for Veterans with Disabilities or the exemption for specially adapted housing.

The saving depends on your local tax rate: the exemption takes $2,000 off the home's EAV, not $2,000 off the bill. You must send the required proof of disability with the first application, and the county assessment office makes the final decision.
