How to apply for Kansas Soldiers' Home (Fort Dodge): nursing, dementia, domiciliary care, and cottages for veterans
Kansas Office of Veterans Services (KOVS)
Who it's for
The Kansas Soldiers' Home is a state veterans home in Fort Dodge, about five miles east of Dodge City. It includes a modern nursing home, a 30-unit long-term care unit, a 26-bed special care unit for dementia, three domiciliary residence halls with 30 domiciliary units, and 54 cottages. Services include nursing, restorative care, physical, occupational, and psychological services, dietary and social services, activities, and laundry. To be admitted, a veteran must have completed active federal service with a discharge under conditions other than dishonorable, meet VA criteria for veteran status, need 24-hour skilled nursing care documented by a physician, not appear on any sex offender registry, and have no felony conviction or guilty plea. Spouses, surviving spouses, and Gold Star Parents may be admitted when space is available. Kansas residency is not required, but Kansas residents get preference, and veterans without adequate means of support get first priority. Call the home at (620) 682-7509.
Admission depends on medical need, the home's ability to provide the care, and space. The admission rules on the KOVS page call for 24-hour skilled nursing needs, so ask admissions about domiciliary or assisted-living openings. Ask admissions what care costs and whether VA benefits can help pay. KOVS makes the admission decision.
