How to apply for Medicare Savings Program (Michigan) — QMB / SLMB / QI
Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS)
Who it's for
Medicare Savings Programs help people with Medicare pay their Part B premium, and (for the QMB level) also deductibles, coinsurance, and copays. Michigan has three levels — QMB, SLMB, and ALMB/QI — with rising income limits. In 2026 the highest level (QI) reaches about $1,816/month for one person and $2,455/month for a couple; the asset limit is $9,950 for one person and $14,910 for a couple. Apply through MI Bridges or a local MDHHS office.
The income limit shown is the highest Medicare Savings Program level (QI). QMB (full premium + cost-sharing help) and SLMB cut off at lower income; a MMAP/SHIP counselor can tell you which level fits. The 2026 income and asset figures are from medicare.gov; Michigan's own published table (RFT 242, eff 4/1/2025) lags one Federal Poverty Level cycle and is slightly lower until MDHHS posts its April-2026 update. QMB enrollees should not be billed for Medicare-covered services.

What to say when you call
"Hello, I'm calling to ask about Medicare Savings Program (Michigan) — QMB / SLMB / QI. I'd like to know whether I may qualify, what documents I need, and whether I can apply online, by mail, by phone, or in person. I understand I may need medicare card (proof of Part A), proof of income, proof of assets / bank statements — is anything else required? What is the best next step?"
Tip: have a pen ready, ask for the person's name, and write down any case or reference number they give you.
Step by step
- Gather your required documents: your Medicare card (proof of Part A enrollment), proof of income, proof of assets or recent bank statements, and proof of Michigan residency.
- Check which level — QMB, SLMB, or QI — may fit your income. The QI level (the highest) reaches about $1,816 per month for one person or $2,455 per month for a couple in 2026, with an asset limit of $9,950 for one person or $14,910 for a couple. QMB and SLMB cut off at lower income amounts. A free MMAP/SHIP counselor can help you figure out which level fits your situation.
- Choose how to apply: online through MI Bridges, or by calling Michigan MDHHS at 1-844-464-3447, or by visiting your local MDHHS office in person.
- Complete the application by answering all questions about your income, assets, and household. Submit your documents along with the application.
- Keep a copy of everything you submit, including any confirmation number or receipt you receive.
What to expect: After submitting, MDHHS will review your application and documents. Processing times vary, so contact MDHHS or call 1-844-464-3447 for an estimate on your case. If approved, the level of help you receive depends on which program you qualify for — QMB covers Part B premiums plus deductibles, coinsurance, and copays, while SLMB and QI cover the Part B premium only. Note: QMB enrollees should not be billed for Medicare-covered services. Coverage must be renewed every year, so watch for a renewal notice from MDHHS and respond promptly to avoid a gap in benefits. Keep in mind that Michigan's own published income table may be slightly lower than the 2026 federal figures until MDHHS posts its next update; a MMAP/SHIP counselor can help you understand the current limits.
