How to apply for Senior Citizen Winter Shutoff Protection (Michigan)
Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) — rules apply to your gas or electric utility
Who it's for
Michigan protects utility customers age 65 and older from having their gas or electric service shut off for nonpayment from November 1 through March 31. To get the protection, tell your utility company that you are 65 or older; some utilities, such as city-owned utilities, have a short sign-up form. You still owe the bill. When the heating season ends, the utility sets up a payment plan for any past-due amount. For questions, call your utility or the MPSC at 1-800-292-9555.
This is protection from shutoff, not help paying the bill. Late fees can still be charged, and past-due amounts must be paid on a payment plan after March 31. Contact your utility to confirm it has you listed as a senior customer.
