What to say when you call

"Hello, I'm calling to ask about Lifeline Utility Assistance — New Jersey. I'd like to know whether I may qualify, what documents I need, and whether I can apply online, by mail, by phone, or in person. I understand I may need proof of age 65+ (or disability), proof of NJ residency, utility account info — is anything else required? What is the best next step?"

Tip: have a pen ready, ask for the person's name, and write down any case or reference number they give you.

Step by step

  1. Gather your required documents before you start: proof of age 65 or older (or proof of disability), proof of New Jersey residency, your utility account information, and proof of all household income.
  2. Choose how you want to apply — online through NJSave or by phone at 1-800-792-9745. Both options use the same NJSave application, which also covers PAAD and Senior Gold at the same time.
  3. Complete the NJSave application by answering all questions about your household, income, and utility account. Make sure all information matches your documents.
  4. Submit your completed application online or confirm submission with the phone representative. Keep any confirmation number or paperwork you receive for your records.
  5. Watch for a notice about your Lifeline eligibility. If approved, the $225 annual credit will be applied directly to your electric or gas utility account — or sent as a check if you are enrolled in PAAD.

What to expect: After submitting, the New Jersey Department of Human Services, Division of Aging Services will review your application. Processing times vary, so contact the agency at 1-800-792-9745 for an estimate. If approved, you will receive a $225 flat annual utility credit applied to your electric account, gas account, or both — or as a check if you are a PAAD-enrolled resident. If your household also qualifies for federal LIHEAP assistance, Lifeline can layer on top of that benefit. Because Lifeline renews annually, watch for a renewal notice each year and reapply promptly to avoid a gap in your credit.
