How to apply for Medicare Savings Programs in Nevada (QMB, SLMB, QI-1)

Nevada Division of Social Services (DSS, formerly DWSS)

Who it's for

Nevada's Medicare Beneficiaries program helps people with Medicare pay their Medicare costs. QMB pays Medicare premiums, co-insurance and deductibles. SLMB and QI-1 pay the Medicare Part B premium. The 2026 monthly income limits are QMB $1,330 for one person or $1,804 for a couple, SLMB $1,596 or $2,164, and QI-1 $1,796 or $2,435. SLMB and QI-1 coverage can start in the month you apply, with up to three months of prior coverage. QMB starts the month after the decision. Apply online through Access Nevada or call DSS toll-free at 1-800-992-0900 (Las Vegas area 702-486-1646, Reno area 775-684-7200).

Shown against the highest tier (QI-1); lower income qualifies for more help. You must have or be able to get Medicare Part A. These programs also have a limit on savings and other resources, which changes each year. QI-1 is federally funded and can close if the state's yearly funding runs out, and people who get other Medicaid cannot get QI-1. DSS makes the final decision.

What to say when you call

"Hello, I'm calling to ask about Medicare Savings Programs in Nevada (QMB, SLMB, QI-1). I'd like to know whether I may qualify, what documents I need, and whether I can apply online, by mail, by phone, or in person. I understand I may need medicare card (showing Part A), proof of income, proof of savings and other resources — is anything else required? What is the best next step?"

Tip: have a pen ready, ask for the person's name, and write down any case or reference number they give you.

Step by step

  1. Check that you have or can get Medicare Part A. QMB, SLMB, and QI-1 are for people with Medicare, and lower income may qualify you for more help.
  2. Gather your Medicare card showing Part A, proof of income, and proof of savings and other resources.
  3. Review the program levels before you apply. QMB helps pay Medicare premiums, co-insurance, and deductibles. SLMB and QI-1 help pay the Medicare Part B premium.
  4. Apply online through Access Nevada or apply by phone with DSS at 1-800-992-0900. In the Las Vegas area, call 702-486-1646. In the Reno area, call 775-684-7200.
  5. Give DSS the required information about your income, savings, and other resources. These programs have a resource limit that changes each year.
  6. Ask DSS which program fits your situation. QI-1 is the highest income tier shown, but lower income can qualify for more help. QI-1 can also close if the state's yearly funding runs out, and people who get other Medicaid cannot get QI-1.

What to expect: After you apply, DSS will review your information and make the final decision. Coverage for SLMB and QI-1 can start in the month you apply, with up to three months of prior coverage. QMB starts the month after the decision. Processing times vary, so ask DSS for an estimate. Renew coverage every year to keep getting help.
