How to apply for Medicare Savings Programs (QMB, SLMB, QI) in South Carolina

South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS)

Who it's for

Medicare Savings Programs help people with Medicare Part A pay Medicare costs. QMB pays Medicare premiums, co-pays, and deductibles. SLMB and QI pay the Medicare Part B premium. South Carolina's monthly income limits (effective March 1, 2026) are QMB $1,330 / $1,804 (one person / couple), SLMB $1,596 / $2,164, and QI $1,796 / $2,435. Countable resources must be below $9,950 for one person or $14,910 for a couple. Apply online through Healthy Connections, by mail or fax, or at your local county office.

Shown against the highest tier (QI); lower income qualifies for more help. You must have Medicare Part A. SLMB and QI pay only the Part B premium and do not come with a Medicaid card. SCDHHS makes the final decision.
