How to apply for Utah Veterans with a Disability property tax exemption (10% or higher VA rating)
Utah State Tax Commission, through your county; Utah Department of Veterans and Military Affairs
Who it's for
Utah exempts part of the taxable value of the home of a veteran disabled in military service with a service-connected disability rating of at least 10 percent. The veteran's unmarried surviving spouse or minor orphans can also qualify. The exemption is up to $535,459 of taxable value of a residence, based on the percentage of disability incurred in the line of duty and on the unemployability classification. It can also be applied to tangible personal property such as motor vehicles. No exemption is allowed for a disability below 10 percent. There is no income or age limit, and U.S. citizenship is not required for this exemption. An application with proof of military service and proof of disability (or death) must be on file with the county where the property is located.
The exempt amount grows with the disability rating and is highest for 100% ratings or for veterans the VA rates as unemployable (individual unemployability); this screen cannot see unemployability, so a veteran with it should apply. Surviving spouses must be unmarried. The county decides the claim.
