How to apply for Utah HEAT (Home Energy Assistance Target): LIHEAP help with heating bills
Utah Department of Workforce Services (DWS), Housing and Community Development, through local HEAT offices
Who it's for
HEAT is Utah's Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). It gives eligible households a one-time payment each program year to help with home energy costs. To qualify, total household income must be at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Level, the household must be responsible for paying its home energy costs, it must have at least one adult, and at least one person must be a U.S. citizen or qualified non-citizen. The monthly income limits (effective March 1, 2026) are $1,995 for 1 person, $2,705 for 2, $3,415 for 3, $4,125 for 4, $4,835 for 5, $5,545 for 6, $6,255 for 7, and $6,965 for 8 (add $710 for each extra person). The program year runs October 1 to September 30, or until federal LIHEAP funds run out. Households with someone who is disabled, age 60 or older, or a child under 6 can apply starting October 1; other households can apply starting November 1. The payment is based on income, energy costs, and household members; households with someone 60 or older or disabled get an extra $150, and households heating mainly with propane get another $150. Apply online through myCase or through your local HEAT office. If you face a shut-off, ask your local HEAT office about crisis help.
HEAT pays one benefit per program year and depends on funding; applications close when federal LIHEAP funds run out. Income is counted for the month before you apply. The local HEAT office makes the final decision and figures the payment.
