How to apply for Real Estate Tax Relief for the Elderly & Disabled — Richmond in Virginia

Richmond County Commissioner of the Revenue / assessment office

Who it's for

Richmond County offers real estate tax relief (exemption) for homeowners who are 65 or older or permanently disabled. Total household income must be $27,000 or less (the first $4,000 of income of each person living in the home other than a spouse is not counted), and net worth (not counting the home) must be $100,000 or less. Net combined financial worth of owner and spouse may not exceed $100,000 (house plus one acre excluded). Age 65 or permanently/totally disabled by Dec 31. Applications filed Feb 1 - May 1 each year. Apply through the local commissioner of the revenue or assessment office.

Limits shown are Richmond County's current published figures; relief brackets, filing windows, and exclusions are set by local ordinance and the locality makes the final determination, so this shows as a may-qualify result. The $27,000 income limit lets the first $4,000 of income of each non-spouse occupant be excluded, so a household slightly over $27,000 may still qualify. Property with delinquent taxes unpaid as of August 1 cannot be approved.
