How to apply for Virginia Medicaid Works — Medicaid for Working People with Disabilities

Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS), through the local Department of Social Services

Who it's for

Medicaid Works lets people who are blind or disabled keep Virginia Medicaid while they work and earn more. You must be at least 16 and younger than 65, have a job (or a letter from an employer with your start date), and be blind or disabled under Social Security rules. Getting SSI or SSDI counts as proof of disability. To start, countable income must be no more than $1,856 a month for one person or $2,509 for a couple, with resources of $2,000 or less ($3,000 for a couple). Once enrolled, you can earn up to $75,000 a year and save earnings in a Work Incentive (WIN) account. Apply online at CommonHelp or at the local Department of Social Services, or call Cover Virginia at 1-855-242-8282.

You must have a job, full or part time, paid at least minimum wage with payroll taxes taken out (or documented self-employment); this check does not ask about work. Coverage ends at age 65. After you enroll, earnings saved in a WIN account do not count against the resource limit. The local Department of Social Services makes the final decision.
