How to apply for Murray County Local Senior Homestead Exemptions (62+, 65+, 70+) in Georgia
Murray County Tax Commissioner and Board of Tax Assessors, 101 S 3rd Ave, Chatsworth
Who it's for
Murray County has several local homestead exemptions for older homeowners, on top of Georgia's statewide exemptions. They use earned income only; Social Security and certain retirement income do not count. Homeowners 62 and older with earned income under $20,000 can take $32,000 off the assessed value for school taxes. Homeowners 62 and older with earned income of $10,000 or less can take $40,000 off for school taxes. Homeowners 65 and older with earned income of $10,000 or less can take up to $12,000 off for county taxes and up to $40,000 for school taxes. Homeowners 70 and older in the Murray County School District can take $80,000 off for school taxes. Apply January 1 to April 1, or within 45 days of your assessment notice. Call 706-695-3423.
You must own and live in the home. Each exemption has its own age and earned-income limit (Social Security and certain retirement income are not counted). The Board of Tax Assessors makes the final decision.
