How to apply for Mississippi income tax: retirement income and Social Security exemption, plus the age 65 or blind exemption
Mississippi Department of Revenue (DOR), Individual Income Tax Division
Who it's for
Mississippi does not tax Social Security benefits, Railroad Retirement benefits, or Veterans Administration payments. Retirement income from federal, state, and private retirement systems is also exempt in total if you met the retirement plan's requirements. Early distributions that are taxed as early or excess distributions under federal law are not exempt. In addition, each taxpayer or spouse who is 65 or older, or blind, can claim an extra $1,500 exemption on the return. You claim these on your Mississippi income tax return (Form 80-105 for full-year residents). For help, call DOR Taxpayer Assistance at 1-601-923-7700.
Pension or IRA money taken early, before you meet the plan's rules, is taxed. Deferred compensation paid before you reach retirement age or service requirements is also taxed. The extra $1,500 exemption cannot be claimed for dependents. DOR makes the final decision.
