How to apply for Oregon Disabled Veteran or Surviving Spouse Property Tax Exemption
County Assessor (statewide exemption under ORS 307.250–307.283, Oregon Department of Revenue)
Who it's for
Oregon takes part of a home's assessed value off the property tax roll for a disabled veteran, or for the surviving spouse or registered domestic partner of a veteran. In 2026 the exemption is $27,092 of assessed value, or $32,512 when the VA or a branch of the Armed Forces certifies a service-connected disability of 40% or more. The amount goes up 3% each year. A veteran rated 40% disabled or more by the VA or the military qualifies with no income limit. A surviving spouse or partner who has not remarried can qualify even if the veteran was never disabled. You must own the home and live in it. File the claim form with your County Assessor by April 1. Most people file only once.
Oregon's threshold is a 40% or higher disability rating, so veterans rated 40% also qualify even though this check screens conservatively at 50%. A veteran certified 40% disabled only by a private physician must have income at or below 185% of the federal poverty level. A surviving spouse or partner who has not remarried qualifies even if the veteran was not disabled, and gets the larger amount if the veteran died of a service-connected cause or had received the larger exemption for at least one year. The veteran must have been discharged under honorable conditions and meet Oregon's service-length rules. The County Assessor makes the final decision.
