How to apply for DHR Health Financial Assistance + Renaissance Cares Foundation (Hidalgo County)

DHR Health (Doctors Hospital at Renaissance) — the largest hospital in the Rio Grande Valley; physician-owned independent hospital in Edinburg serving the broader Hidalgo County and Lower RGV region; supplemented by the Renaissance Cares Foundation (501(c)(3) nonprofit)

Who it's for

DHR Health (formerly Doctors Hospital at Renaissance) is the largest hospital in the Rio Grande Valley, located in Edinburg and serving Hidalgo County plus the broader Lower RGV region. Unlike Harris Health, Parkland, University Health, Central Health, JPS, or UMC El Paso, DHR Health is an INDEPENDENT PHYSICIAN-OWNED HOSPITAL — NOT a public hospital district. Hidalgo County does not maintain a public hospital district structure; instead, DHR Health, South Texas Health System (which operates McAllen Medical Center, Edinburg Regional Medical Center, and several other RGV hospitals), and Rio Grande Regional Hospital are the primary acute-care providers. DHR Health offers a Financial Assistance Program with self-pay discounts, sliding-scale payment options, and additional payment plan arrangements. DHR financial counselors are available Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m.-11:30 p.m., with 24-hour weekend availability and emergency-room counselors 24/7. Call 956-362-7730 for financial counseling. The Renaissance Cares Foundation (a 501(c)(3) nonprofit) supplements the hospital's direct financial assistance by funding chemotherapy treatment, medicine, surgery, imaging studies, house and utility bills, transportation, lodging, nutritional supplements, and other support for community members who can't get the health services they need. Hidalgo County is one of the largest U.S. counties without a public hospital district — making the philanthropic Renaissance Cares Foundation and DHR's discretionary financial assistance the principal safety net for uninsured/underinsured patients.

Hidalgo County is DISTINCTIVE in lacking a public hospital district — DHR Health, South Texas Health System, and Rio Grande Regional Hospital are the major acute-care providers, all PRIVATE OR PHYSICIAN-OWNED. This means: (1) financial assistance criteria are DISCRETIONARY rather than driven by the explicit FPL-tiered public hospital district programs found at peer TX metros (Harris Health, Parkland, University Health, Central Health, JPS, UMC El Paso); (2) the Renaissance Cares Foundation is a philanthropic supplement, not a guaranteed program — its support is need-based and discretionary; (3) for uninsured RGV residents at or below 200% FPL, DHR financial counselors often assess on a case-by-case basis. For Medicare-eligible Hidalgo seniors, DHR accepts Medicare and works with patients on cost-sharing; for those at or below SSI/SSP income limits, the Medicare Savings Programs (QMB/SLMB/QI) are typically the deepest assistance pathway. Note also that Hope Family Health Center (an Edinburg nonprofit clinic) provides free medical care for uninsured/indigent RGV residents and is supported by DHR Health and Hidalgo County — Hope is a meaningful complement to DHR's discretionary assistance.
